Paul's Letters And Journeys

Don't miss your chance to study the Apostle Paul and his seven authenticated letters, and his 30-year journeys throughout the Roman world.

Paul has been called a ‘colossus’, and so he was – the greatest figure of Christianity next to its founder, Christ Jesus. Now you can look at the full body of his work to see how the themes spill over into each of his seven letters and what makes his letters distinct (as opposed to the many others attributed to him).

You will discover the topics Paul addressed in each letter, from freedom to sin, where he traveled, the challenges he encountered, and the profound difference in each audience. The purpose is to help you understand Paul's understanding of Christ and how that can bless and inform your spiritual journey today.

Women Of The Bible

The video series on Women of the Bible offers an in-depth look at the remarkable female figures from both the Old and New Testaments,  women who are matriarchs, slaves, judges, prophets, and disciples.  Episodes are one hour long, ideal for a group Bible study.

Each video program is accompanied by pre-work questions to assist in your reading before you watch an episode.  There is also a special handout of the slides that underscores key points and includes beautiful artwork about these Biblical women.

This Women of the Bible series has nine segments: six programs on Women of the OLD Testament and three videos on Women of the NEW Testament.

The Book of Exodus

Exodus Part I:

Liberation from Bondage

Exodus, the second book of the Torah,  comes from the Greek for "departure," perfect since its central theme is the departure of the Israelites from Egypt. It is a continuation of the Book of Genesis that begins the Patriarch's stories then picks up as the family and their offspring are in Egypt.  Exodus is also fundamental for Christian teachings with this greatest story of liberation.

This Bible study, focused on chapters 1-19,  continues the mega themes introduced in Genesis, such as God's covenant with Israel, how Israel must act as a special community to be God’s witness in the world and the promise of freedom and salvation this implies. These chapters address the many near misses when this divine promise seems so precarious.

These chapters are a prologue to the laws and commandments to come, and what it means to be the nation which has a covenant relationship with God.

Exodus Part II:

The Ten Commandments and The Law

The focus of this Bible study (Exodus chapters 19-40) is The Law and its implications for a Covenant people.  You will glean new insights into the Ten Commandments, which are the moral precepts that have shaped civilization for the last 3,000 years, as well as the "Book of the Covenant," the name of a second set of laws following the Ten Commandments.

We are on holy ground in these Bible chapters because they also teach us about how to worship this God we are getting to know.  What does it mean to obey Him?  How do we worship God?  Like the Israelites of old, you will learn what it means to follow God's direction implicitly. Understanding how the Hebrews began to become a people guided by the power of the Law shines a light on our spiritual path, making all the decisions needed to live a life following God.

Israel Virtual Tour

Whether you have traveled to Israel, hope to one day, or may never, this series is an eye-opener for what biblical Israel holds for the Bible student.

This 12-episode video series will help you  link the area's geography, culture, and locations to the biblical text. It also looks at specific passages and the Biblical figures referenced, revealing what the location looked like, its physical and cultural characteristics and topography. This background isn't to be a historical expert but to give greater meaning to the biblical passages you study.

See and experience key Scriptural sites and locations today by following the same itinerary Madelon uses when leading groups to Israel. Understand the historical relevance of these locations and how their physical topography illuminates Biblical passages.

This virtual tour is a unique Bible study expedition to expand your understanding of the Scriptures.

Jesus' Parables

Parables were the favorite way Jesus communicated.  He told stories about trees and soil and seeds and sheep -- everyday things that anyone could understand.  And they were secular stories, with only one of the almost 40 he told mentioning God.  These are stories to make you think, to scratch your head, to figure out how they apply to your situation now.

I love how Eugene Peterson, author of "The Message", describes what then happened after people walked away thinking there was nothing threatening about these stories.  "Like a time bomb, they would explode in their unprotected hearts.  An abyss opened up at their very feet.  He was talking about God; they had been invaded!"

These seven parables cover economic and money issues, one of the challenges many families face in contemporary times.  Listen to the one-hour video segments and let them "explode" in your head and heart!

Even better, gather some friends, form a Bible study, and share what they mean to you and hear from others.  Fascinating stuff!

Biblical Community

This four-part series sheds light on why community is so important in both the Bible and today.  Use it to inform your commitment to your current faith community and how it can be  strengthened.

You will learn how a biblical community provides a support network to encourage connections, promote spiritual well-being, and explains how to bond with others who share similar values and goals.

Explore how a community grounded in the Scriptures can speak to isolation, political unrest, foreign adversaries, overreach by government and economic challenges.  These were all  difficulties people faced in the Old and New Testament periods as well.

You will learn through these four one-hour videos how a community is formed through mutual respect, prayer, the Holy Spirit and love.

Biblical Leadership

Any bookstore carries dozens of titles of leadership books.  But very few take their lead from the Bible!  Improve your leadership skills by learning how they can be grounded in biblical principles.

This course explores three main areas:

  • Five attributes of leadership based on thousands of interviews by leadership gurus, Kouzes and Posner.
  • Biblical examples of leaders and leadership, from both the Old and New Testaments
  • Your preparation for greater leadership grounded in these practical principles.

France and Religion

These three one-hour video talks offer a unique opportunity to get a bird's eye view of the overarching patterns that emerged in French history, from Caesar to the Enlightenment.  You'll learn about religion in the Roman period in ancient Gaul, the Middle Ages, the Reformation in nearby Germany, the break from the Papacy, the Enlightenment, and how all those roads led to the French Revolution.

You will discover how these trends shaped religion in France through the centuries, how they build on one another and lead to the trends in religion we see (or don't see) in today's France.

  • Philippians: Paul's Lesson In Joy

During difficult times--politically, economically, internationally or culturally--nothing could be better than taking a deep dive into Paul's letter to the Philippians.  In spite of challenging circumstances for both Paul (the author of the letter) and the people of Philippi. Paul's counsel is about the importance of joy regardless of circumstances.

The Psalmist wrote of “a river whose streams make glad the city of God” (Ps. 46:4).  This is the spirit of Philippians, to teach us how this joy is not ephemeral but the characteristic of God's kingdom, and here for us now.

Paul understood how tough life can be, but he never deserted his expression of joy, from the Latin, hilaritas!  He wanted Christians to share in the 'joy in the faith' (Phil. 1:25) and as we learn more of this message, we can.

  • Revelation: Unpacking Heavanly Symbols

Few Biblical books have proven as challenging as Revelation, the last book written in the New Testament.  This Video Bible Study was created to unpack its symbols, find its themes, understand its two locations of the heavenly kingdom and earth.  See how the dozens of images from the Torah and prophets and Psalms are brought forward to apply to the turmoil Roman persecution caused in the late first century AD.

The author's purpose was to fortify and strengthen Christians facing persecution, something that many Christians in the Middle East and other parts of the world face today.

You can discover the historical, symbolic, literary, political, geographical, and religious influences on John of Patmos, its author, and the 1st century AD in which he lived.   Particular focus is put on the many vivid symbols the author makes, drawing on his extensive knowledge and use of the Hebrew Scriptures.

  • Psalms: Our Timeless Prayer Book

What is it about these 150 poems and hymns that has brought such comfort and guidance for centuries?  One of the joys of learning more about the Psalter is experiencing how they can become prayers to work with today.  Whether laments or praise hymns, they cover every emotion and feeling, from anguish to joy.

Discover the five hymn books that constitute the Psalter and their distinctions.  Learn how you can pray with them more effectively. Billy Graham said he read a Psalm every night, becoming "Psalm-soaked" as one of my seminary professors explained.

Diving more deeply into the Psalms is your path forward for an effective way to pray and praise.  They don't ignore how difficult life can be, yet they lead us out of self-pity and worry about new discoveries of God's love and power. This greater understanding can bring the Psalms even more to life for you and help navigate the challenges of today.

  • Acts of the Apostles:  Seeing the Holy Spirit in Action

After the  resurrection and ascension, the followers of Christ Jesus found themselves wondering what to do next, and then it happened:  the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.  Acts tells how men and women were transformed by this singular event and went on to build the Christian church that thrives today.

You will learn about the historical, geographical, political and religious background to provide greater insight that can guide each of our Christian journeys today. The goal is to pull forward the lessons those early Church workers learned in the power of the Holy Spirit and the courage it provides to share with others the transforming message of Jesus Christ.

With Luke's tremendous story-telling power, learn why his Book of Acts (Luke's second volume after the Gospel), is one of the best biblical books to use in a first Bible study. It is riveting!!
