Biblical Matriarchs Part I
We begin this series with a look at the women Matriarchs, starting with Sarah, Hagar, and Rebecca. Issues such as barrenness and its impact on social and family roles, slavery and heirs that beget nations, and the role of extended family all fill these women’s stories with meaning and impact, then and now.
Biblical Matriarchs Part II
In this episode, more Biblical Matriarchs are explored and a slave-- Leah, Rachel, and Tamar. How did polygamy affect Israel’s development, and how did wives such as Leah and Rachel negotiate their roles? What about sexual violence in Tamar and Dinah’s cases? We will see how women and society deal with an issue that continues to raise its ugly head.

Women Of The Wilderness Period - Part I
Image: Pharoah's daughter finds baby Moses, by Nicolas Poussin
This episode dives into the women of the wilderness period, starting with the nameless. What about those Hebrew midwives so central to Moses’ arrival? And Pharoah’s daughter who ensured his safety? We’ll see how many influential women are anonymous in the Hebrew Scriptures, known only by their relationship to a man, and explore some others so important to their time.
Women Of The Wilderness Period - Part II
Image: Miriam, the sister of Moses
Continuing with women of the wilderness period, we’ll explore two women important in Moses’ adult life: Zipporah, his Midianite wife, and Moses’ sister, Miriam. What was their impact on this colossal figure of Israel’s development and his impact on both Judaism and Christianity through the Commandments? We’ll also tale stock of the courage of Rahab in her critical role with Joshua and company as the Hebrew people enter Canaan. Finally, we investigate Deborah, the only female judge.

Women In Judge's Time

The Judges is a fascinating but less known period of Israel’s history. In the last episode, we checked out Deborah who so fearlessly led her people. Countering her courage is the sensuous Delilah, who undermines the judge, Samson, and brings on a Philistine assault. By contrast, we’ll meet the daughters of Zelophehad, who championed property rights for women. Finally is Hannah's story in I Samuel, a lead up to the Monarchy.
Women In The Monarchy
Image: David meeting Abigail, Peter Paul Rubens
The Monarchy was a critical moment in Israel’s development, when King David united the twelve tribes to stave off mutual enemies. The women who most influenced Israel’s greatest King were Bathsheba and Abigail. We will look at a later queen, Jezebel, who introduced foreign gods into Israel. Finally, we examine the book of Esther, whose central figure became a Queen during the Persian Period, and shows how the Jews had to relate to foreign monarchies and cultures.
WOMEN OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
Women Of The New Testament - Part I
Image: Sketch of Mary and Jesus, Rembrandt
For the New Testament portion of this series, we ask how they build on their Hebrew Scripture counterparts. The first woman considered is naturally Mary, the Mother of Jesus, noting not only her Biblical role but what she has meant to the development of Christianity through the centuries. Her cousin, Elizabeth, is critical to the unfolding story of the prophesied Messiah as the mother of the last prophet. And finally, we consider the prophetess, Anna, who importantly beheld and identified the Savior.
Women Of The New Testament - Part II
Image: Nola mi Tangere, Touch me Not, Titian
This episode investigates the additional Mary's of Jesus’ life, including Mary Magdalene and Mary of Bethany, sorting out their story from the myths that surrounded them. There is an important sister relationship with Martha to explore as well as the non-canonical work, The Gospel of Mary Magdalene. This includes looking at the archaeological find of the Nag Hammadi texts discovered in the 1940's and related to her character.
Women Of The New Testament - Part III

"The Whore of Babylon"
Following the resurrection is the period of the Early Church and its growth under the Apostle Paul. We take stock of the women who were instrumental in that work, including Lydia of Philippi and Priscilla of Ephesus. The series closes with the Book of Revelation and two key women: the woman ‘clothed with a cloud’ and the ‘whore of Babylon’ who acts as a counterfoil to the former.
